TMBR MOTO SUZUKI DR-Z4S PROJECT BIKE

Not Saying It’s the Best DR-Z4S Build Out There... But It’s Right Up There

For years at Upshift Online Magazine, building project bikes was central to what we did. We’d take stock machines, dial them in for real-world off-road testing, and push them across rugged backcountry routes to see how they handled true adventure travel.

When Upshift wrapped up its Magazine run, that passion didn’t disappear—it evolved into TMBR Moto. Back in the Upshift days, our Suzuki DR-Z400S 2.0 Project was an absolute workhorse for us, taking everything we threw at it without missing a beat. So when Suzuki dropped the newly updated DR-Z4S, it was the undeniable choice for our next build base platform. We wanted to bring that exact same level of detail, testing, and trail-focused design to this modern platform—creating a machine ready to tackle multi-day adventures, technical dualsport routes, and everything in between using parts we test, trust, and sell every day at TMBR Moto.

Is It the "Best Dualsport" Out There?

Every influencer with a camera and a toolset claims to have built the absolute best dualsport on the planet. We aren't making grand declarations or crowning ourselves dualsport royalty—at the end of the day, "best" is entirely subjective depending on where and how you ride. But looking at how balanced, protected, and capable this DR-Z4S turned out, we think it’s right up there with the top builds in the community. More than anything, we built a bike that is wildly fun, extremely capable, and ready for whatever terrain we throw at it.

The Build Breakdown

To turn the stock Suzuki DR-Z4S into a backcountry machine, we systematically upgraded performance, protection, range, cockpit ergonomics, and luggage capacity.

Engine & Drivetrain

  • 2Wheel Dynoworks ECU Tune: Re-mapped to smooth out power delivery, optimize fueling, and unlock crisp throttle response across the entire rev range.
  • Yoshimura RS-12 Stainless Slip-On Muffler: Lightens the rear end while providing a crisp, responsive exhaust note and enhanced mid-range punch.
  • Superlite 520 Sprockets (14 Tooth Front / 44 Tooth Rear): Dialed-in gearing combination to improve low-end torque for technical trail work while keeping highway cruising smooth.

Armor & Protection

  • AXP Racing Enduro Skid Plate & Radiator Guard: Serious plastic protection against sharp rocks, log strikes, and heavy trail abuse.
  • Acerbis X-Power Engine Guards: Snug-fitting guard set shielding engine cases from side impacts, boot wear, and dropped-bike scuffs.
  • AXP Chain Guide: Keeps the chain tracking true over rough terrain, preventing costly thrown-chain scenarios.
  • TMBR Moto Frame Scuffs: High-friction frame protection that keeps the finish safe from abrasive off-road boots.

Cockpit & Ergonomics

  • Seat Concepts Comfort Seat (Standard): Essential for long highway transfers and full days in the saddle without fatigue.
  • Chiggee AIO-6 Max Smart Riding Display with TPMS: Integrated smart display adding turn-by-turn navigation, smartphone connectivity, and real-time tire pressure monitoring directly on the dash.
  • Barkbusters Hand Guard Kit + VPS 2.0 Plastic Shields: Solid aluminum backbone protection for hands and controls paired with broad coverage shields.
  • ODI Rogue Soft Glue-On Grips: Extra cushioning and deep tread patterns to minimize arm pump and vibration over chatter.
  • Doubletake Mirror Dual Sport Mirror 2.0 Set: Folds completely out of harm's way on tight trails and provides clear visibility on pavement.
  • Aurora Rally Equipment Adventure Kit: Cockpit navigation tower setup that elevates wind protection and mounts navigation gear cleanly.

Range, Traction & Handling

  • IMS Products 3.3 Gallon Fuel Tank: Increases range significantly for backcountry routes without widening the ergonomics.
  • Dunlop D606 Tires: The standard for aggressive dualsport traction on dirt, mud, and rocks.
  • Mitas Heavy Duty Inner Tubes: Added pinch-flat insurance for low-pressure off-road riding.
  • Galfer Front Floating Wave Rotor: Improves heat dissipation and braking modulation for technical descents.

Gear & Aesthetics

  • Mosko Moto Reckless 10L V2.0 Triple Black / Stinger 8L Tailbag: A rackless, bombproof soft-luggage solution tailored for tight, weight-conscious packing.
  • AXP Racing Rear Rack: Offers a light, low-profile tie-down platform for tail bags and emergency supplies.
  • Yoshimura Fender Eliminator Kit: Cleans up the bulky stock tail section with a compact, durable license plate bracket.
  • TMBR Moto Graphics Kit: Gives our project DR-Z4S a custom visual identity out on the trail.

Out on the dirt, the ECU tune and Yosh pipe immediately made their presence felt. Throttle response was crisp, snappy, and gave us plenty of punch to loft the front wheel over trail obstacles or tractor through tight singletrack. Dropping to a 14/44 sprocket setup was the secret sauce here—it woke up the bottom end for technical terrain, but to our surprise, open highway stretches were still totally manageable, even without a 6th gear.

The stock suspension is definitely on the soft side for aggressive riding, and we’ll eventually swap in stiffer springs to dial it in. That said, it held up surprisingly well under the weight of our gear and armor without feeling completely overwhelmed.

Up front, the Aurora Rally kit was an absolute game-changer. Beyond looking like a factory rally bike, the windscreen knocked down buffeting on long highway liaisons, kept our navigation setup completely shielded from roost and dust, and the dual headlight setup blew the stock lighting out of the water once the sun dipped.

Having built and tested plenty of white and orange Austrian bikes over the years—along with Honda’s CRF450RL—we came away thoroughly impressed. Suzuki’s legendary durability, paired with these target upgrades, makes this DR-Z4S a ridiculously fun, sweet-spot middleweight for serious backcountry travel.

One of the best things about the DR-Z platform is how approachable it is to work on. If you're a DIY kind of rider who enjoys turning wrenches in your own garage, you’ll have no problem executing a build like this yourself. Outside of mailing out the ECU for a tune, virtually every upgrade on this list can be tackled with basic hand tools, a torque wrench, and a couple of weekend hours. It’s a rewarding machine to personalize, and knowing every bolt on your bike gives you that extra confidence when you're miles away from cell service.
